While reading through my textbook for Opinion Writing, I came across a great point about editorials and the internet.
Basically, in the past, everyone has competed for limited space (newshole) in magazines and newspapers. In theory, only the best, most pointed editorials get in. This is true for articles as well.
With the net comes unlimited space. No character restrictions, no word counts, and with it comes the desire to ramble on. The poin the author makes is that web writers should still work on getting to the point, of being succinct – to pass the reader test.
This really helps me cement my thoughts on web writing, which is very important for three of my classes this fall. It cements that good, classic newspaper style is still viable, still important. It cements that editing is still paramount, that blogs do have to fit into a format and that readers still care about quality. All good news, really. For those of us receiving training in these fields.
